A Guide to Fraud Resources
In the month of June, I have chosen to write about the different fraud resources you can use if you become a victim of a scam or some type of fraud. June is my birthday month and what better gift than to give to the community resources in these times of need.
In today’s digital age, the threat of fraud looms large, with scammers and identity thieves constantly trying to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Whether you’ve fallen victim to a phishing scam, credit card fraud or identity theft, knowing where to turn for help and support is crucial. We will explore the various fraud resources that can provide the support and guidance you may need.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC): The FTC is the leading authority on consumer protection and fraud prevention. This website offers a wealth of resources for victims of fraud, including step-by-step guides on reporting, creating a recovery plan, and disputing fraudulent charges. They also provide educational materials, scam alerts, and tips for avoiding future fraud incidents. You can visit the FTC website at www.ftc.gov
Credit Reporting Agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are the three major credit reporting agencies. Victims of fraud can contact these agencies to place a fraud alert on their credit report, which notifies creditors to take extra steps to verify the identity before extending credit. **You are also entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each agency annually. ** This can help catch unauthorized activity. You can contact the three credit reporting agencies by telephone at
Equifax: 1-800-349-9960
Experian: 1-888-397-3742
TransUnion: 1-800-916-8800
